Side-by-side: prices, features, where each one wins.

Choosing between Airalo and Simsimsim? Here’s an honest side-by-side.
We’re going to put our cards on the table up front: Simsimsim is a new brand. Airalo has been around since 2019 and is the most recognised travel eSIM on the planet. That alone is a real reason a lot of people pick them — and we won’t pretend otherwise. What we will do is show you the actual differences so you can pick the one that fits your trip, your wallet, and your phone.

Pricing breakdown — 5 popular destinations
Smallest data plan, approximate prices in USD as of the date above. Always check the live page before buying — both sides run promotions and prices move.
| Destination | Airalo (smallest plan) | Simsimsim (smallest plan) |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | ~$4.50 / 1 GB / 7 days | ~$3.50 / 1 GB / 7 days |
| USA | ~$4.50 / 1 GB / 7 days | ~$3.90 / 1 GB / 7 days |
| Spain | ~$4.50 / 1 GB / 7 days | ~$2.90 / 1 GB / 7 days |
| UAE | ~$4.50 / 1 GB / 7 days | ~$4.50 / 1 GB / 7 days |
| Thailand | ~$4.50 / 1 GB / 7 days | ~$3.50 / 1 GB / 7 days |
The pricing gap is usually a dollar or two on the smallest bucket. On bigger plans (10–20 GB), the picture changes per country — sometimes Airalo is actually cheaper because of bulk pricing. Don’t pick based on the headline number alone; check the exact plan you’d actually use.
When Airalo is the better choice
We’d genuinely point you to Airalo if any of these apply:
- You want a brand you’ve already heard of. Airalo is the default recommendation in travel forums for a reason. If you’re not eSIM-curious and just want the “safe” pick, it’s a fine pick.
- You’re going somewhere niche. Airalo’s 200+ country list edges ours — if your destination is a very small market, check Airalo first.
- You like apps. Airalo’s app handles install, top-ups, support chat, and usage tracking in one place. If you want everything in one tap, that’s a real benefit.
- You need years-old Trustpilot reviews to feel safe. That’s a legitimate concern. Airalo has tens of thousands of reviews. We don’t yet. That’s just the truth.
When Simsimsim is the better choice
Where we genuinely differ:
- You want to pay in crypto. USDT or BTC, no card required. Airalo doesn’t offer this.
- You don’t want to install an app. Your QR code arrives by email within 60 seconds. Scan it in iOS/Android Settings and you’re done. No account required to activate.
- You speak Russian and want Russian-language support. Our team is bilingual EN/RU. Airalo’s Russian support is limited.
- You want a transparent welcome credit. $5 on signup, no funky referral chains needed.
- You want a long refund window. 180 days before activation, no questions. Useful if you bought “just in case” and didn’t travel.
- You’re price-sensitive on the cheapest tier. Our entry plans tend to start lower.
Common questions
Is Simsimsim safe?
Honest answer: we’re new, so we don’t have Airalo’s track record. What we do have is a 180-day refund policy on unactivated eSIMs — if anything goes wrong before you scan the QR, you get your money back. Payment is processed by standard providers (Stripe for cards, audited crypto rails). The eSIM profiles themselves come from the same wholesale carriers that supply most of the industry. If you’re risk-averse for a critical trip, buy a small test plan first and see how it goes.
Why is Airalo more popular?
First-mover advantage and marketing budget, mostly. They launched in 2019 when the eSIM-only travel category barely existed, so they grew with the market. They also spend heavily on influencer and travel-blog placement. Popularity is real social proof — we’re not knocking it. It’s just not the same thing as being the right fit for every traveler.
Do they use the same providers?
Often, yes. Most travel eSIM resellers — including us, Airalo, and most of the field — buy wholesale capacity from a small number of upstream carriers (think 1GLOBAL, Telna, MTX Connect, and a handful of others). The actual network you connect to in-country is usually the same. The differences are: which carrier they negotiated the best wholesale rate with for a given country, what they charge on top, how the plan is packaged, and how the support experience feels. So if you’re worried “is Simsimsim’s network worse?” — usually no, it’s the same physical network as the big names.
Can I top up?
Both yes. Airalo lets you top up the same eSIM profile in-app. We let you top up the same profile via email link — no app needed. Pricing per top-up is comparable.
Will it work on my phone?
Both work on the same modern devices: iPhone XS or newer, Pixel 3 or newer, Galaxy S20 or newer, plus most flagships from 2020 onward. Older phones won’t take an eSIM regardless of provider.
TL;DR
Pick Airalo if: you want the established brand with the longest reviews trail, you’re happy installing an app, you don’t need crypto payment, and you want the biggest country selection on paper.
Pick Simsimsim if: you want to pay in crypto, you don’t want to install an app, you want Russian-language support, you want a generous refund window, or you’re trying to keep entry-plan cost down.
Both are real options. The honest reality is that for most popular destinations, the eSIM in your phone will connect to the same physical network either way — the difference is the buying experience, the payment options, and the support behind it.
Get started
If you’re not sure yet, grab the $5 welcome credit and try the cheapest plan for your first destination. Worst case, the 180-day refund window has you covered.
