How to Buy an eSIM

A clear, no-bullshit guide for first-time travelers.

Last updated: 2026-05-19

You land in a new country, switch your phone off airplane mode, and watch your carrier slap a $12-per-day roaming fee on the screen. Or you hunt for a kiosk at the airport, queue for 40 minutes, and end up with a physical SIM you have to swap and then lose.

A travel eSIM solves both problems. You buy it online, scan a QR code, and you have local data the moment you land. This guide walks you through exactly how to do it — what to check before you pay, how to install the profile, and what to avoid.

How to buy and install an eSIM (step-by-step)

Here is the full flow, from choosing a plan to having working data abroad.

Step 1: Check that your phone supports eSIM

Not every phone has the chip. As a rule of thumb: iPhone XS or later, Pixel 3 or later, Galaxy S20 or later, and most modern unlocked Androids support eSIM. On iPhone, open Settings > General > About and scroll to EID — if it’s there, you’re good. On Android, dial *#06# and look for an EID number alongside the IMEI.

Step 2: Make sure your phone is unlocked

A carrier-locked phone often will not accept a third-party eSIM profile. If you bought your phone on contract from a US, UK, or EU carrier, call them and ask for an unlock — it’s usually free if the contract is paid off.

Step 3: Pick a destination and a plan

Decide where you’re going and roughly how much data you’ll use. On Simsimsim you can browse 186 destinations and filter by country or region pack. We’ll cover plan sizing in detail below.

Step 4: Pay

We accept card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and crypto (USDT or BTC). First-time buyers get a $5 welcome credit on their first plan. Checkout takes about 30 seconds — no account creation required, just an email.

Step 5: Receive the QR code

The QR code lands in your inbox within 60 seconds of payment. Keep that email — you’ll need the QR code (or the manual activation string inside it) to install the profile.

Step 6: Install the eSIM profile

On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Use QR Code. Point the camera at the QR (you’ll need to display it on a second screen, or use the “Enter Details Manually” option). Label the plan something like “Travel”.

On Android (Pixel / Samsung / most others): Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add eSIM. Scan the QR. Confirm activation.

Step 7: Configure data routing

Once the profile is installed, choose which line uses cellular data. On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data > [your eSIM]. On Android, set the new eSIM as the default mobile data SIM. Turn off data roaming on your primary line so your home carrier doesn’t sneak in.

Step 8: Activate on arrival

Most travel eSIMs — ours included — start their validity timer the moment the profile connects to a network in the destination country, not when you install it. So you can install the profile at home, board your flight, and the clock only starts when you land and toggle the eSIM on.

What you need before buying an eSIM online

Before you put money down, check four things:

  • A compatible device (see step 1 above)
  • An unlocked phone — if it’s locked, the profile installs but won’t connect
  • A working email address — that’s where the QR code goes
  • A Wi-Fi connection at the moment of installation — you can’t install an eSIM profile over cellular data on the line you’re replacing

That’s it. No SIM tray tool, no plastic, no kiosk.

How to pick the right travel eSIM plan

The two variables are data amount and coverage area. Here’s how to think about both.

Sizing your data

A rough rule for casual travelers (maps, messaging, occasional video):

  • 1 week: 3-5 GB
  • 2 weeks: 5-10 GB
  • 1 month: 10-20 GB
  • Heavy use / remote work: 50 GB or our 100 GB plans

Streaming video, video calls, and tethering eat data fast. If you’ll be working from a laptop over your phone’s hotspot, double whatever you estimated.

Country plan vs regional plan

If you’re spending the whole trip in one country, buy a single-country plan — it’s almost always cheaper per GB. If you’re hopping between countries (Schengen tour, Southeast Asia trip), a regional plan that covers multiple countries on one profile saves you from juggling installs.

Our country plans start at $2.90. Regional packs are priced per region — see the country page for current options.

Common mistakes when buying an eSIM

These are the four mistakes we see most often. Avoid them and you’ll have a clean trip.

  1. Buying before checking compatibility. Some 2018-era phones look modern but lack the eSIM chip. Check the EID before you pay. Our refund policy covers 180 days before activation — but it’s faster to just check first.
  2. Trying to install over cellular. You need Wi-Fi to install the profile. Do it at home, in your hotel, or on airport Wi-Fi.
  3. Forgetting to disable data roaming on the primary line. If your home SIM is still set to roam, your carrier may sneak in and bill you anyway. Disable roaming on the home line explicitly.
  4. Assuming voice/SMS works. A data-only eSIM does exactly that — data. No voice calls, no SMS over the cellular line. Use WhatsApp, iMessage, Signal, or Wi-Fi calling for voice. (Almost all travel eSIMs on the market work this way.)

FAQ

How long does it take to buy an eSIM?

About 90 seconds total — 30 seconds for checkout, 60 seconds for the QR code email to arrive. Installation takes another minute or two.

Can I buy an eSIM before I leave home?

Yes, and you should. Install the prepaid eSIM profile on Wi-Fi before you fly. The validity timer only starts when the eSIM connects to a network in the destination country.

What if my phone is not compatible?

Check the EID first (see step 1). If your phone doesn’t have one, no eSIM provider can help — you’ll need a physical SIM. We refund unused eSIM plans up to 180 days before activation.

Do I need to remove my regular SIM?

No. eSIM runs alongside your physical SIM on a dual-SIM setup. Your primary line stays active for calls and SMS to your home number; the eSIM handles data abroad.

Can I pay with crypto?

Yes — we accept USDT and BTC alongside card, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.

What if the QR code doesn’t scan?

Every QR code we send includes a manual activation string. On iPhone, choose Enter Details Manually and paste the SM-DP+ address and activation code from the email. Same on Android under the Add eSIM flow.
