eSIM APN Settings: When and How

Most travel eSIMs configure APN automatically. Here's what to do when they don't.

APN — Access Point Name — is the technical bridge between your phone and the carrier’s data network. If you came here from another troubleshooting page, you’re probably in the small minority of users where auto-config didn’t work. Here’s how to fix it.

You probably don’t need to set APN

Modern eSIM profiles ship with APN settings pre-configured. The vast majority of Simsimsim customers never touch this. If your eSIM works after install — don’t read the rest of this page.

When you DO need to set APN

Three symptoms point to an APN problem:

  1. Signal is full strength, carrier name shows correctly, but every website times out. Not a coverage issue — the data path is misconfigured.
  2. Speedtest shows zero throughput even though you’re connected to a 4G/5G network.
  3. Carrier name appears, but iPhone shows “No Internet Connection” or Android shows “Connected, no internet” persistently for 10+ minutes.

If you have all three — APN is probably the cause. If you have only one, it could be coverage or network issues — try our general connecting troubleshooter first.

How to set APN on iPhone

Apple makes APN editing slightly harder than Android — they prefer carriers ship pre-configured profiles. But you can override.

  1. Open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data)
  2. Tap your Simsimsim eSIM line under “SIMs”
  3. Tap Cellular Data Network (this option only appears for certain carriers — if you don’t see it, you can’t override APN on this iOS version)
  4. Under Cellular Data, set:
  5. APN: internet (this is the generic fallback that most travel eSIMs accept)
  6. Username: leave blank
  7. Password: leave blank
  8. Scroll down — also fill APN in LTE Setup (Optional) and Personal Hotspot if you want tethering
  9. Restart the eSIM line (toggle off and back on under “Turn On This Line”)

If “Cellular Data Network” doesn’t appear in your iPhone Settings, your iOS profile is locked. In that case the only fix is to reinstall the eSIM via QR code.

How to set APN on Android (Samsung Galaxy)

  1. Settings → Connections → SIM manager
  2. Tap your Simsimsim eSIM
  3. Tap Access Point Names (or APN)
  4. Tap + (add new) — don’t edit the auto-detected one, create a fresh entry
  5. Fill:
  6. Name: Simsimsim
  7. APN: internet
  8. Leave Username and Password blank
  9. APN type: default,supl
  10. APN protocol: IPv4/IPv6
  11. Save (top-right menu → Save), then tap the radio button next to your new APN to activate
  12. Toggle Airplane Mode for 5 seconds to force re-registration

How to set APN on Pixel / stock Android

  1. Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs
  2. Tap your eSIM
  3. Tap Advanced → APN
  4. Tap + to add new
  5. Same field values as the Samsung guide above

What APN values does Simsimsim use?

We don’t publicly publish per-country APN values because they auto-configure 99% of the time, and the wrong manual APN can prevent connection entirely.

If internet (generic fallback) doesn’t work after you’ve tried it, don’t keep guessing different APNs. Email us with your destination country and phone model — we’ll send the right values within hours.

FAQ

Why did APN work for my friend’s eSIM but not mine?

Different phone models, different iOS/Android versions, and sometimes different times of day all affect auto-configuration. APN config is sensitive to your specific device-carrier combination.

Can I use the same APN for every country?

Often yes — internet works for many travel eSIMs because resellers route through carriers that accept generic APNs. If it doesn’t work for a specific destination, the country-specific APN may be different.

Should I set APN before traveling?

No. Wait until you’re in-country and the eSIM has had 5+ minutes to attempt auto-config. Premature APN setting can override correct auto-config.

Does APN affect speed?

Theoretically no — APN is a routing setting, not a bandwidth setting. If you’re slow, see the connecting troubleshooter, not APN.

Why doesn’t iPhone always let me edit APN?

Apple lets carriers lock APN editing on a per-profile basis. If your eSIM ships locked, you can’t edit. Reinstalling via QR may produce a new profile that allows editing.
