eSIM Not Connecting? Diagnose in 60 Seconds
Three common symptoms, three diagnostic paths. Most issues fix without contacting support.
Last updated: 2026-05-19
Your eSIM installed successfully but something’s wrong. Maybe “No Service” in the status bar. Maybe full signal but pages won’t load. Maybe a working connection that’s painfully slow. Each symptom has a different cause. This page walks through the diagnostic in order.
60-second diagnostic flowchart
Match your symptom to the right path:
- No bars / “No Service” at all → Path A (eSIM line not enabled, no network registration)
- Bars showing but websites won’t load → Path B (data line wrong, roaming off, or APN issue)
- Connected, but everything is painfully slow → Path C (coverage / network selection / 5G fallback)
Path A — No service at all
Most common cause: the new eSIM line isn’t enabled in Settings.
On iPhone:
Settings → Cellular(or Mobile Data)- Under “SIMs”, tap your new Simsimsim eSIM
- Check that Turn On This Line is enabled
- If still no service, toggle Airplane Mode on for 5 seconds, then off
On Android (Samsung Galaxy):
Settings → Connections → SIM manager- Tap the Simsimsim eSIM
- Check that the SIM is active (toggle on if not)
On Pixel:
Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs- Tap your eSIM and check it’s enabled
Still nothing? You may have landed in a coverage dead zone — move 100 meters and try again. Underground stations, building basements, and remote areas often have no signal.
Path B — Bars, but no data
This is the most common post-install issue. Three sub-causes.
Sub-cause 1: Wrong data line. If you have your home SIM plus the Simsimsim eSIM, the phone might be trying to use your home line for data (which will fail abroad or roam expensively).
- iPhone:
Settings → Cellular → Default Voice Lineshould be your home SIM.Cellular Datashould be set to your Simsimsim eSIM. - Android:
Settings → SIM manager → Mobile data→ select Simsimsim eSIM as the data SIM.
Sub-cause 2: Data Roaming disabled. Travel eSIMs always operate in “roaming” mode (the local carrier sees your eSIM as a roamer, even though you bought a local plan). If Data Roaming is off, no data flows.
- iPhone:
Settings → Cellular → [Simsimsim line] → Data Roaming— enable. - Android:
Settings → SIM manager → [Simsimsim] → Mobile data → Data Roaming— enable.
Sub-cause 3: APN issue. Rare but happens. See our eSIM APN settings guide for the fix.
Path C — Connected but slow
Likely cause: weak signal, 5G instability, or congested network.
Quick fixes:
- Switch from 5G to LTE. 5G is faster on paper but unstable in some areas.
iPhone: Settings → Cellular → [eSIM line] → Voice & Data → LTE. Android similar. - Manual network selection. Force the phone to a specific carrier instead of auto-selecting. iPhone:
Settings → Cellular → Network Selection → off auto-select → pick carrier from list. Best to pick the strongest one for your area (we partner with the largest local carriers). - Restart cellular radio. Toggle Airplane Mode for 30 seconds. Forces re-registration.
First 5-10 minutes after install
When you land in a new country and your eSIM activates for the first time, registration with the local carrier can take 1-5 minutes. Sometimes longer if you’re at a busy airport. This is normal.
Don’t: - Immediately conclude the eSIM is broken - Submit a chargeback before contacting support - Toggle settings rapidly (each toggle restarts the registration cycle)
Do: - Wait 5 minutes with Airplane Mode off - Try opening a website (not just checking signal bars) - Move 50-100 meters if at a busy transit hub
In-country troubleshooting
If your eSIM was working but now isn’t:
- Restart the phone. Genuine 80% fix for transient issues.
- Toggle Airplane Mode. Forces fresh network registration.
- Check carrier status. Sometimes the underlying carrier has a regional outage. Try a different network manually.
- Reinstall the eSIM. If profile is corrupted: delete it, scan QR again (you keep your activation code in email).
FAQ
Will my eSIM work in airplane mode?
No. Airplane mode disables all cellular radios. Toggle it off after landing.
Why does it work in some cities but not others?
You’re moving between carrier coverage zones. The eSIM uses your carrier’s national agreements — most areas are covered, but small rural pockets may not be. If it’s persistent across a region, try manual carrier selection.
Can I use Wi-Fi while the eSIM isn’t connecting?
Yes — Wi-Fi works independently. Use Wi-Fi to message support while you troubleshoot.
My phone says “Could not activate cellular data network”. What now?
This means the carrier rejected your eSIM. Usually a temporary issue — wait 10 minutes and toggle Airplane Mode. If persistent for 30+ minutes, contact us.
Should I delete and reinstall?
Only as a last resort. You CAN reinstall using the QR code from your activation email — it works once after a profile deletion. Contact support first.
