If you travel with a tablet — for work, reading, or as a second screen — an eSIM gives it independent mobile data without relying on hotspot from your phone. Cellular-model iPads and select Android tablets support eSIM, so you can install a travel data plan directly. This guide shows which iPad and Android tablet models support eSIM, how to set it up, and how to get travel data on your tablet abroad.

Which iPads support eSIM

Only Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad models have eSIM (Wi-Fi-only iPads cannot use cellular at all). Among cellular models:

  • iPad Pro (11” and 12.9”/13”) — 3rd gen and newer support eSIM
  • iPad Air — 3rd gen and newer (cellular models)
  • iPad (standard) — 7th gen and newer (cellular models)
  • iPad mini — 5th gen and newer (cellular models)

The newest iPad Pro and iPad Air (M-series) are eSIM-only for cellular — no physical SIM tray.

To check: Settings → Cellular Data → if you see “Add eSIM” / “Add Data Plan”, your iPad supports eSIM.

Which Android tablets support eSIM

Samsung Galaxy Tab (cellular/5G models): - Galaxy Tab S series (S7, S8, S9, S10) — 5G models support eSIM - Galaxy Tab S FE (cellular variants)

Other Android tablets: - Google Pixel Tablet — Wi-Fi only (no eSIM, no cellular) - Most budget Android tablets — Wi-Fi only

Important: like iPads, only the cellular/LTE/5G variants of Android tablets support eSIM. Wi-Fi-only tablets have no cellular modem at all.

To check: dial *#06# on the tablet (if it has a dialer) and look for EID, or Settings → Connections → SIM card manager → “Add eSIM”.

How to install eSIM on iPad

  1. Connect iPad to Wi-Fi.
  2. Open SettingsCellular Data (or Mobile Data).
  3. Tap Add eSIM or Add Data Plan.
  4. Select Use QR Code.
  5. Scan the QR code from your eSIM purchase email (displayed on another screen).
  6. iPad downloads the profile.
  7. Label the plan, enable Data Roaming for travel eSIM.

iPads are data-only devices (no voice calls over cellular), so a data-only travel eSIM is a perfect match.

Travel eSIM for tablets — why it’s useful

  • No tethering drain. Tethering from your phone drains the phone battery fast. A tablet eSIM gives the tablet its own connection.
  • Work on the go. Email, docs, video calls on a bigger screen with stable data.
  • Backup connectivity. If your phone dies or loses signal, the tablet stays online.
  • Same travel eSIM marketplace. Simsimsim travel eSIMs work on any eSIM-compatible iPad or Android tablet — pick a country, install the QR, done.

Browse Simsimsim destinations — data plans from $2.90, work on tablets and phones alike.

FAQ

Can I use eSIM on a Wi-Fi-only iPad? No. Wi-Fi-only iPads have no cellular modem and cannot use eSIM or any cellular data. You need a Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad model.

Does iPad Pro support eSIM? Yes, iPad Pro 11” and 12.9”/13” (3rd gen and newer, cellular models). The latest M-series iPad Pro is eSIM-only for cellular.

Does Samsung Galaxy Tab support eSIM? Galaxy Tab S series 5G/cellular models (S7, S8, S9, S10) support eSIM. Wi-Fi-only Tab variants don’t.

Can I share one eSIM between my phone and tablet? No. An eSIM profile is bound to one device. You’d need a separate eSIM plan for the tablet, or tether from your phone’s eSIM instead.

Can I make calls on an iPad with eSIM? iPads don’t support voice calls over cellular — they’re data-only. Use FaceTime, WhatsApp, or Zoom over the data connection. A data-only travel eSIM is ideal for iPad.

Does Google Pixel Tablet support eSIM? No. The Pixel Tablet is Wi-Fi only — no cellular modem, no eSIM.

Can I use a travel eSIM on my tablet abroad? Yes. If your tablet is a cellular eSIM-compatible model, buy a travel eSIM for your destination, install the QR in Settings, and you have mobile data on the tablet directly.

How do I check if my tablet supports eSIM? iPad: Settings → Cellular Data → look for “Add eSIM”. Android tablet: Settings → Connections → SIM card manager → “Add eSIM”, or dial *#06# and look for EID.
