How to Activate eSIM on iPhone and Android
eSIM activation is the first connection to your carrier's network. From this moment your plan countdown begins. This guide covers how to activate eSIM on iPhone and Android, when to do it, and what to do if activation doesn't start.

eSIM “activation” is the first successful connection of the profile to the carrier’s network. Before activation, the profile is installed on the phone but not working; after activation, the plan countdown starts (7 days, 30 days, etc.) and you can use internet, calls, and SMS. This guide covers how to activate eSIM on iPhone, Android (Pixel/Samsung), when to activate (before leaving or on arrival), and what to do if activation doesn’t start.
What is eSIM activation
When you install an eSIM profile (via QR code), it goes into an “installed, not activated” state. In this state:
- ✅ Profile stored in phone memory
- ❌ Not connected to carrier network
- ❌ Plan countdown not running (important for travel eSIM)
- ❌ No calls, SMS, or data
Activation happens automatically when the phone first registers on the carrier’s network. From that moment:
- ✅ Plan “starts” — 7/30 day countdown begins
- ✅ Data, calls, SMS available (depending on plan)
- ✅ Can use normally
How to activate eSIM on iPhone
iPhone activates eSIM automatically. There’s no separate “activate” button. Steps:
- Ensure eSIM is installed (Settings → Cellular → should appear in the list).
- Turn on the eSIM line — Settings → Cellular → select profile → “Turn On This Line” toggle should be green.
- Enable Cellular Data on the eSIM line (if using for internet).
- Enable Data Roaming for travel eSIM (mandatory — otherwise iPhone blocks connection).
- Wait 30-60 seconds — iPhone tries to register on the carrier’s network.
- Top-left corner shows network indicator (5G, 4G, LTE) with carrier name. This is activation.
If eSIM doesn’t activate automatically — see What to do if activation doesn’t start below.
How to activate eSIM on Android (Pixel, Samsung)
Same principle — activation is automatic at first connection.
Pixel: 1. Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → select eSIM profile. 2. Enable “Use SIM” and “Mobile data” toggles. 3. Enable “Roaming”. 4. Wait for network registration.
Samsung Galaxy: 1. Settings → Connections → SIM card manager → select eSIM. 2. Enable “Use SIM”. 3. Enable “Mobile data” on this line. 4. Enable “Roaming”.
When to activate — before leaving or on arrival
This is the most important question for travel eSIM. Answer: don’t activate at home.
Scenario 1: Activate on arrival (recommended)
- Install eSIM via QR at home (safe — doesn’t start countdown).
- On the plane, turn off the eSIM line in Settings or enable Airplane Mode.
- On arrival in destination country, turn on the eSIM line and disable Airplane Mode.
- Phone automatically registers on local network — this starts activation.
- Plan countdown (7/30 days) begins from this moment.
Scenario 2: Force activation at home (not recommended for travel eSIM)
- If you turn on the eSIM line at home, the phone tries to register on roaming from your home network.
- Many travel eSIMs are configured so activation INSIDE your home country simply doesn’t start — the carrier knows you should be in the destination country.
- But if your travel eSIM is global (e.g., region eSIM), activation may start at home — plan timer begins.
Rule: for travel eSIM, keep the eSIM line off until arrival in destination country.
What to do if activation doesn’t start
Symptoms: eSIM line is on, Roaming is on, but iPhone/Android shows “No Service” or “Searching…” on this line for more than 5 minutes.
Checklist:
- Toggle Airplane Mode on/off — most common fix. Forces reconnection to all networks.
- Restart phone — sometimes the eSIM stack needs a reboot.
- Check Data Roaming in Settings → Cellular → select eSIM → Data Options. Must be on.
- Check APN — some carriers require manual APN configuration. More: eSIM APN settings.
- Go outside or near a window — weak indoor signal can block first registration.
- Wait — sometimes activation takes 10-15 minutes after arrival. Normal.
- Remove and reinstall eSIM — last resort. Only if QR is still valid (not one-time used).
If nothing helps — contact carrier support. Simsimsim — support@simsimsim.app, typical response time a few hours.
FAQ
Is eSIM activation the same as installation? No. Installation is downloading the profile to the phone via QR. Activation is the first connection to the carrier network. After install, eSIM “sleeps”; after activation, it works.
When does the eSIM plan countdown start? At activation, not at purchase or installation. Bought eSIM today → installed tomorrow → flew next week — the 7-day plan countdown starts the day you arrive in destination country.
Can I activate eSIM remotely? No. Activation happens automatically at first physical connection to the carrier network. Requires you to be in the carrier’s country (or roaming zone).
Can I activate eSIM on a computer? No. eSIM only activates on an eSIM-compatible phone (iPhone XS+, Pixel 3+, Galaxy S20+, etc.).
What if activation doesn’t start within an hour of arrival? Check: 1) is the eSIM line on; 2) is Roaming on; 3) is there signal; 4) restart phone. If still nothing — contact carrier support.
Can I cancel activation and get a refund? Depends on carrier. Simsimsim — 180-day cash refund if not installed; 30-day cash refund if installed but not activated. After activation — credit (12 months validity), not cash.
Does eSIM activation work over VPN or another network? Activation requires direct connection to the carrier’s cellular network. VPN or Wi-Fi don’t qualify — needs mobile registration on the carrier’s network.
How many times can I activate eSIM? Once. After activation, the profile is bound to this phone and plan. To transfer to a new phone, use eSIM Transfer.
Can I activate eSIM without leaving home? Travel eSIM — only in the carrier’s country/zone. Permanent eSIM (home carrier contract) — yes, activates anywhere with the carrier’s coverage.
