Bali Tourist SIM Card: What to Buy and What It Costs

Telkomsel, XL, Indosat IM3 and Smartfren, prices in rupiah, IMEI rules for phones bought abroad, airport or city, and a comparison with a tourist eSIM.

Last updated: 2026-10-14

A tourist SIM in Bali costs about 85,000–150,000 rupiah (around $5–10) for a pack with 25–30 GB per month in town. The same SIM at the airport can cost 200,000–300,000 rupiah. You buy it with your passport at a Telkomsel, XL, Indosat or Smartfren store. Under the IMEI rules, according to reviews, if you stay in Indonesia for less than 90 days you usually do not need to register your phone with customs. But sources differ, so details are below. If you need a connection right after landing, it is simpler to set up an eSIM in advance.

Prices checked in October 2026 from reviews and public sources. We could not confirm official price lists. Tariffs change, so amounts are given as ranges. Exchange rate used: about 16,000 rupiah per dollar.

Which operators are there in Indonesia?

  • Telkomsel. The best coverage nationwide, including small islands and mountains. Usually more expensive than the competitors.
  • XL. Cheap packs and top-ups, but coverage outside the cities can be uneven. According to open sources, XL and Smartfren are merging into XLSmart, although the brands are still sold separately.
  • Indosat (IM3). Mid-range prices and good packs of 30 GB and more. Reviews often call it the “golden middle” segment.
  • Smartfren. Works in most places, but its coverage is considered the weakest of the four.

Any of them will do for Bali, Ubud, Seminyak, Canggu and Nusa Dua. If you are going to Lombok, the Gilis, Komodo or the volcanic areas, choose Telkomsel.

How much does a SIM card cost for a tourist in Bali?

These are guides from reviews, not a price list.

Operator Example pack from reviews Price (checked October 2026)
Telkomsel Tourist pack: about 25 GB and 25 minutes, 30 days about 150,000 IDR (~$9.5); in town shops ~85,000–150,000 IDR
XL 15 GB for 30 days at Indomaret or Alfamart ~60,000 IDR (~$4); starter 3 GB ~35,000 IDR
Indosat IM3 ~30 GB a month about 100,000 IDR (~$6); basic packs from ~50,000 IDR
Smartfren Packs of 20–30 GB similar range to XL; we did not find a current price list

The airport costs more. According to one review, at the airport a Telkomsel pack with 21 GB cost 300,000 IDR, while at a shop in Kuta the same volume cost 100,000–150,000 IDR. A two- to threefold difference appears in other materials too. Sources also disagree on how long the tourist Telkomsel stays valid (30 days in some, 60 in others), so check at the counter.

Do you need a passport and registration?

Yes. SIMs in Indonesia are registered with a passport: the staff enters your details at purchase. Bring the original document. SIMs are sold in official operator stores (Telkomsel calls them GraPARI), at airports, and in Indomaret and Alfamart shops, but the safest option is an operator store.

IMEI registration: what to know

In Indonesia, phones brought in from abroad are entered into an IMEI database, and unregistered phones may be blocked. For tourists, according to 2026 reviews, the situation is as follows:

  • Up to 90 days. Several reviews say a short-term visitor does not need to register anything with customs. When buying a tourist SIM, the operator usually registers the IMEI for free at its store: you need the phone and your passport. In the electronic customs declaration (All Indonesia), one review says, you should state that you will stay no longer than 90 days.
  • Over 90 days. Those who stay longer (digital nomads, residents) must register the phone with customs (Bea Cukai). Reviews cite a duty-free limit of $500; above that, about 40% may be charged (about 30% for KITAS holders). If you miss the deadline, according to the same reviews, tax is charged on the full value. These amounts appear in several commercial reviews, and we found no confirmation on an official Bea Cukai page.
  • What happens without registration. For stays longer than 90 days, the phone may be blocked on Indonesian networks.
  • Sources disagree. Some materials mention a “60-day grace period” after arrival, others don’t, and some SIM sellers claim IMEI registration is included in the price of the pack. These are sellers’ claims.

Practical conclusion: for a holiday of one to three weeks you may not need to register the phone separately, but before buying a local SIM ask the store whether the operator will enter the IMEI. For an eSIM bought online, the customs registration question does not arise for your trip: the phone simply works on roaming, and the 90-day limit does not apply to you.

Which is better for a tourist: local SIM or eSIM?

Local SIM Travel eSIM
Purchase Store, shop or airport, with passport Online before the trip
Passport / documents Required; the number is registered to you Not needed, only email
Internet on landing After the queue and registration Immediately, if the profile was installed in advance
Price ~$4–10 a month in town; the airport is more expensive Depends on volume, see the table below
Local number Yes No, data only
IMEI question Comes up with a long stay Doesn’t come up on a short trip
Main SIM Needs a second slot or a card swap Stays in place; SMS still arrives

Honest verdict: if you are in Bali for a month or longer, you need an Indonesian number for Gojek and Grab, delivery and rentals, and a local SIM bought in town is much cheaper. For a week or two, with a night arrival and no wish to queue at a counter, an eSIM is more convenient. More on the difference: eSIM or physical SIM.

Our Indonesia plans use Telkomsel, Indosat and XL, with 5G on Telkomsel and Indosat. The eSIM has no local number: you can call through messengers and receive SMS codes on your main SIM. Hotspot works on most plans, and if data runs low, you can top up the same eSIM on most plans. All plans: eSIM for Indonesia.

How to get internet in Bali before your flight: step by step

  1. Check your phone. eSIM works on iPhone XS and newer and on most current Android phones. Compatibility list.
  2. Buy the plan in advance. The QR code arrives by email, usually within a few minutes.
  3. Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi. On iPhone: Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM. Details: how to install an eSIM.
  4. Don’t turn it on before the flight. The plan starts when your phone first connects to a network in Indonesia.
  5. After landing, select the eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming on that line. Keep your main SIM for calls and SMS, and turn off mobile data on it.

What is the coverage on the islands and in the mountains?

In southern Bali (Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Uluwatu), Ubud and Denpasar the signal is stable for all operators, and 4G is almost everywhere. In the north of the island, in the mountains (Bedugul, Kintamani, Mount Batur), and on Nusa Penida and the Gilis, the signal is weaker, and Telkomsel is more reliable there. For trips to nearby islands, check your operator’s coverage map and download offline maps.

When is a local SIM cheaper, and when isn’t it?

Count by duration and by where you buy. A SIM from town (Indomaret, GraPARI) for a month at $4–10 is almost always cheaper than an eSIM with the same volume. An airport SIM at 200,000–300,000 IDR is comparable in price to an eSIM, and a queue after a flight is not worth it. For a week, an eSIM is usually cheaper and more convenient.

Travel tips

  • Don’t buy a SIM at the airport “just in case” if you can wait until you reach town.
  • Turn off data roaming on your main SIM, or background updates will charge you.
  • Dual SIM saves SMS codes. The main line receives the bank codes, and data comes from the eSIM.
  • Fill in the electronic customs declaration before you arrive. The form is available online a few days before entry.
  • Download offline maps for the mountains and winding roads.
