Huawei eSIM — Compatible Models, Setup & Activation

Select Huawei flagships support eSIM. This guide shows which models are compatible, how to check your phone, the Google-services caveat for post-2019 Huawei, and how to install eSIM step by step.

Last updated: 2026-05-31

Huawei supports eSIM on a selection of its flagship phones, but availability is narrower than Apple, Samsung, or Xiaomi — and there’s an extra wrinkle: Huawei phones released after mid-2019 ship without Google Mobile Services (GMS) due to US trade restrictions, which affects how you manage some carrier apps (but not eSIM itself). This guide shows which Huawei models support eSIM, how to check your phone, how to install eSIM, and what the Google-services situation means for travelers.

Which Huawei phones support eSIM

Huawei flagships with eSIM: - P40, P40 Pro, P40 Pro+ - Mate 40, Mate 40 Pro, Mate 40 Pro+ - P50, P50 Pro, P50 Pocket - Mate 50, Mate 50 Pro - Mate X2, Mate Xs 2 (foldables) - Pura 70 series (P-series successor) - Mate 60 / Mate 70 series (China-focused, eSIM region-dependent)

Not supported: - Most budget Huawei (Y-series, Nova budget tiers) - Older flagships before P40 / Mate 40 (P30, Mate 30 and earlier — no eSIM)

Important: eSIM availability varies by region and exact model variant. Always verify with *#06# (see below).

How to check if your Huawei supports eSIM

Method 1 — dial *#06#: 1. Open the Phone app. 2. Dial *#06#. 3. Look for the EID line (32-digit number). 4. If EID is present → your Huawei supports eSIM.

Method 2 — in Settings: 1. Settings → Mobile networkSIM management (or Mobile data). 2. Look for “Add eSIM” or an eSIM tab. 3. If present → eSIM is supported.

How to install eSIM on Huawei — step by step

After buying an eSIM plan, you receive a QR code by email. Open it on another device to scan from the screen.

  1. Connect Huawei to Wi-Fi.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Go to Mobile networkSIM management.
  4. Tap Add eSIM (or the eSIM section).
  5. Select Scan QR code.
  6. Point the camera at the QR code from the email.
  7. Huawei downloads the profile in 30-60 seconds.
  8. Confirm, label the line.
  9. For travel eSIM — enable Data Roaming on this line.

Activation starts automatically when first connecting to the carrier’s network.

The Google services caveat (important for travelers)

Huawei phones released after mid-2019 use Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and AppGallery instead of Google Play, due to US trade restrictions. What this means:

  • eSIM itself works fine — it’s a hardware/carrier feature, unaffected by Google.
  • No native Google Maps / Gmail / Google Play out of the box. You use Petal Maps, AppGallery, or sideload apps.
  • For travelers, this matters because some carrier eSIM management apps are Google-Play-only. But you don’t need any app to use a Simsimsim travel eSIM — it’s QR-based, installed directly in Settings, no app required.

If you have a pre-2019 Huawei (P30 or earlier) — those still have Google services, but they also lack eSIM.
