iPhone 17 eSIM
Buy a travel eSIM and install on iPhone 17, 17 Air, 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max โ works in 186 countries.
Last updated: 2026-05-19
The iPhone 17 series, released in September 2025, made eSIM the default โ and in many countries, the only โ way to add a cellular line. If you travel internationally with an iPhone 17, a travel eSIM is no longer a convenience. It’s the cheapest, fastest, and often the only way to get local data without paying carrier roaming rates.
This page covers what changed with the iPhone 17 lineup, how to install a travel eSIM in under a minute, and the small mistakes that cost people their data allowance on day one of a trip.
Why iPhone 17 needs eSIM
Apple removed the physical SIM tray on US iPhone models starting with the iPhone 14 in 2022. With the iPhone 17 launch, Apple expanded the eSIM-only configuration to 12 more countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Japan and South Korea. In all of these markets, the iPhone 17 (base, Pro and Pro Max) ships without a SIM tray.
The iPhone 17 Air went further: it is the first iPhone with no physical SIM tray anywhere in the world, including mainland China. There is no “Chinese dual-SIM” variant of the Air.
For an international traveler, the practical effect is the same in every case: when you land somewhere new, the only way to add a local data line is to install an eSIM profile. A travel eSIM from Simsimsim does this in about 60 seconds without leaving the airport.
iPhone 17 model lineup
| Model | Physical SIM tray | eSIM support | Max eSIM profiles | Active at once |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 (base) | Outside US/UK/EU + 10 others | Yes | 8 | 2 |
| iPhone 17 Air | No tray anywhere โ including China | Yes (only option) | 8 | 2 |
| iPhone 17 Pro | Outside US/UK/EU + 10 others | Yes | 8 | 2 |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | Outside US/UK/EU + 10 others | Yes | 8 | 2 |
The 8-profile / 2-active limit is the same as iPhone 13 through 16. You can store eight different country eSIMs and switch between them without reinstalling.

How to install eSIM on iPhone 17
You have three ways to install. Pick whichever is easiest given where you are.
Method A โ QR code (most common)
You need the QR code on a second screen (laptop, tablet, or someone else’s phone) โ you can’t scan your own screen.
- Open
Settings > Cellular. On UK and AU iPhones this is labelledSettings > Mobile Data. - Tap Add eSIM.
- Tap Use QR Code.
- Point the camera at the QR. iOS detects it in about a second.
- Tap Continue, then Add Cellular Plan.
Method B โ Manual entry
If you don’t have a second screen, copy the activation details from your order email.
Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Use QR Code.- Tap Enter Details Manually at the bottom.
- Paste the SM-DP+ Address and Activation Code from the email.
- Tap Next, then Add Cellular Plan.
Method C โ Direct install link (iOS 17.4+)
The fastest method on iPhone 17 (which ships with iOS 18 or later).
- Open the activation email on the iPhone itself.
- Tap the “Install eSIM” link.
- iOS opens Settings directly to the install screen. Tap Continue.

Picking the right line
After install, iOS asks you to label the new plan. Pick a name you’ll recognise โ “Travel” or the country name works. Then iOS asks four questions about how to use it. Here’s the configuration that works for most travelers:
| Setting | Recommended |
|---|---|
| Default Line | Home line (your normal number) |
| iMessage & FaceTime | Home line |
| Default Line for Mobile Data | Travel (the new eSIM) |
| Allow Cellular Data Switching | Off |
This pattern โ travel eSIM for data, home line for calls and iMessage โ means friends still reach you on your normal number, iMessage keeps working, and all your data goes through the cheap local plan.
You can change these any time in Settings > Cellular > Default Line for Mobile Data.
Compatibility quirks
China model iPhone 17 (base, Pro, Pro Max). iPhones sold in mainland China retail have historically used dual physical SIMs with no eSIM. As of iPhone 17 launch, this is still true for the base/Pro/Pro Max โ they ship with a SIM tray and limited or no eSIM support depending on the model year. Only the iPhone 17 Air is eSIM-only in China.
Hong Kong and Macau. Retail iPhone 17 units there typically support dual physical SIM and dual eSIM, similar to other Asia-Pacific markets. They work with travel eSIMs.
Carrier lock. A travel eSIM only works if the iPhone is unlocked. Check Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. It should read “No SIM restrictions”. If you bought your iPhone through a US carrier instalment plan, it may stay locked until paid off.
5G and LTE on iPhone 17
Every iPhone 17 model supports 5G NR, including standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) modes. Our partner networks deliver 5G in countries where local operators offer it โ that includes most of Europe, North America, the Gulf, South Korea, Japan, Australia, and a growing list of Latin American markets.
If 5G isn’t available, the iPhone automatically falls back to LTE. There’s no setting to toggle.
Common gotchas
Default Line for Mobile Data is still set to home line. After install, double-check Settings > Cellular > Default Line for Mobile Data. If it’s still your home number, you’ll burn carrier roaming charges instead of using the travel eSIM.
Data Roaming is off for the new profile. Some travel eSIMs require Data Roaming to be enabled. Open Settings > Cellular, tap the Travel plan label, and switch on Data Roaming. This does not enable roaming on your home line.
iMessage stuck on the old number. If you change which line iMessage uses, sign out and back in: Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > Apple ID > Sign Out. Then sign back in.
Trying to scan the QR on the same phone. You can’t scan a QR from the screen displaying it. Use Method B (manual) or Method C (direct link) if you only have one device.
Installing before you arrive. Most Simsimsim plans start counting from the moment you connect to a local network, not from install. You can install at home before flying and only activate when you land.
FAQ
Can I use multiple eSIMs on iPhone 17? Yes. iPhone 17 stores up to 8 eSIM profiles and lets 2 be active at the same time. You can keep a home line and a travel line both active.
Will my home number still get iMessage? Yes, as long as you set iMessage to use the home line in Settings > Messages > iMessage & FaceTime.
Does eSIM activation need Wi-Fi? You need an internet connection to download the profile โ Wi-Fi or any working cellular connection works. Once installed, the eSIM works on its own.
Will the eSIM stay if I reset my iPhone? A full erase removes eSIMs. Back up the QR or activation string before you reset. iOS 17 and later can preserve eSIMs across an iPhone-to-iPhone transfer.
What about the iPhone 17 Air specifically? The Air is the first iPhone with no physical SIM tray globally, including China. See our dedicated iPhone 17 Air eSIM page for the Air-specific story.
Can I install the eSIM before I leave? Yes. Install at home over Wi-Fi. Most plans only start the validity timer when you connect to a network in the destination country.
Does iPhone 17 support 5G with travel eSIMs? Yes, where the local operator supports 5G. iPhone 17 negotiates the highest available band automatically.
What if installation fails? Re-check that your iPhone is unlocked, that Wi-Fi works, and that you haven’t already installed the same QR on another device (each QR is one-time). See eSIM not connecting for full troubleshooting.
