Samsung Galaxy S20 FE and eSIM: Is It Supported?
The answer by model code (SM-G780F, SM-G781B, SM-G781U), a one-minute check, and working alternatives for your trip.
Short answer: no. The Galaxy S20 FE does not support eSIM, in either the 4G version (SM-G780F) or the 5G versions (SM-G781B in Europe, SM-G781U in the US, SM-G781W in Canada). Samsung’s eSIM device lists do not include it, and the FE line only gained eSIM with the Galaxy S23 FE. The phone has no embedded eSIM chip, so you cannot install a travel eSIM from a QR code.
Does the S20 FE support eSIM? By model
| Model | Code | Region | eSIM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S20 FE (4G) | SM-G780F | Europe, Asia and others | No |
| Galaxy S20 FE 5G | SM-G781B | Europe, Asia and others | No |
| Galaxy S20 FE 5G | SM-G781U | USA | No |
| Galaxy S20 FE 5G | SM-G781W | Canada | No |
On Samsung Community, S20 FE owners (SM-G780F/DS) report that SIM manager has no option to add a mobile plan, which is the eSIM entry point. Some web articles claim the S20 FE has eSIM, but they usually cite no Samsung specification. Rely on the official spec page for your model and on the check on the phone itself.
Do not confuse it with the regular Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra: those do support eSIM. “S20 FE” is a different model.
How to check your model
- Model code. Open Settings, About phone. The code (for example SM-G780F or SM-G781B) is under Model number.
- EID. Dial
*#06#. If the screen shows an EID (a 32-digit number), the phone has an eSIM chip. On the S20 FE you will see only IMEI numbers. - SIM manager. Settings, Connections, SIM manager. If there is no Add eSIM, eSIM is not supported.
- Samsung’s spec page for your model, under Network or SIM.
For other phones, use our device compatibility checker or the main guide, Samsung eSIM.
What to do if your phone has no eSIM
A travel eSIM will not work here, but you still have options for mobile data abroad:
- Local SIM card. Insert a physical nano-SIM from your destination. The S20 FE takes regular SIMs. Downsides: you buy it on arrival, often with a passport, and your home SIM leaves the slot (on dual-SIM models you may keep both, but the second slot can be shared with microSD).
- Pocket Wi-Fi. Rent or buy a portable router and share data with your phone and laptop. Good for groups, but it is one more device to charge and return.
- A phone with eSIM. If you travel often, consider upgrading. On Samsung, eSIM exists on the Galaxy S20, S21, S22 and newer, the S23 FE and later FE phones, and every Z Fold and Z Flip. See the compatible devices list.
- Home carrier roaming. Needs no setup, but it is usually the most expensive.
How to use an eSIM once you have a compatible phone
This works on any Galaxy with eSIM, such as the S21 or S23 FE:
- Buy a plan before your trip. It stays valid for up to 180 days from purchase, so you can activate it later.
- Receive the QR code by email, usually within minutes.
- On Wi-Fi, open Settings, Connections, SIM manager, Add eSIM, Scan QR code.
- After landing, select the eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming.

FAQ
Does the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE support eSIM?
No. Neither the S20 FE 4G (SM-G780F) nor the S20 FE 5G (SM-G781B, SM-G781U, SM-G781W) has eSIM. The FE line only added it with the S23 FE.
Can a software update enable eSIM on the S20 FE?
No. eSIM needs a dedicated chip (eUICC) in the hardware. A One UI update cannot add it.
How do I check whether my Samsung has eSIM?
Dial *#06#: if an EID is listed, the chip is there. Also look for Add eSIM under Settings, Connections, SIM manager.
Which Samsung should I buy if I want eSIM?
The Galaxy S20, S20+, S20 Ultra and newer, the S23 FE and newer, and the Z Fold and Z Flip. Support on A-series phones depends on region, so check the phone. Details: Samsung eSIM.
Local SIM or pocket Wi-Fi with an S20 FE?
For one traveller, a local SIM is simpler. For a group or a work laptop, pocket Wi-Fi is handier, but you must charge and return it.
What if I bought an eSIM and my phone does not support it?
If you never installed it, you can get a refund within 180 days. If you installed it but did not activate it, the window is 30 days.
