Turkey Tourist SIM Card: What to Buy and What It Costs

Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom, the IMEI registration rule, indicative prices for October 2026 and a comparison with a tourist eSIM.

Last updated: 2026-10-14

Short answer: tourists in Turkey can choose from three carriers with their own networks: Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom. Physical SIMs are sold in shops and at airports against your passport, and airport prices are usually higher. If you use a Turkish SIM in a phone bought abroad for more than 120 days, the phone must be registered by IMEI, or it may be blocked. For a short trip, a tourist eSIM is simpler.

Which SIM card can a tourist buy in Turkey?

Three operators with their own networks provide mobile service: Turkcell, Vodafone Türkiye and Türk Telekom. There are virtual operators too, but tourists almost always choose one of the “big three”.

  • Turkcell — the largest operator, with good coverage in cities and resorts; tariffs are usually slightly higher than competitors’.
  • Vodafone — a strong network in Istanbul, Antalya, Bodrum and other tourist regions.
  • Türk Telekom — according to traveller reviews, often more stable on intercity roads and in small towns.

Tourist starter packs (often called “tourist packs”) include a SIM, gigabytes of internet and sometimes local minutes and SMS. Validity is usually 20–30 days. Pack contents change, so check them at the counter or on the operator’s website on the day you buy.

How much does a tourist SIM card cost in Turkey?

We could not find current official price lists, so the figures below are rough guides from traveller reviews, checked October 2026. These are ranges, not guaranteed prices:

  • Türk Telekom: roughly 500–700 lira for a pack of 15–25 GB (one review mentions about 30 euros for 25 GB over 28 days, including the SIM).
  • Turkcell and Vodafone: roughly 550–800 lira for 15–30 GB; foreign reviews put it at about 15–25 US dollars.
  • At airports (Istanbul, Sabiha Gökçen, Antalya) tourist SIMs are often sold noticeably above city shop prices; reviews mention a difference of 2–3 times.

The lira exchange rate and tariffs change quickly, so these figures may be outdated within a couple of months. Before buying, compare the price at an operator’s city shop with the airport price.

What do you need to buy a SIM in Turkey?

  1. Passport. The SIM is registered to your passport details; the shop scans the document.
  2. Unlocked phone. If it is tied to a Russian or another carrier, the SIM will not work.
  3. Time. At a shop, 15–30 minutes; at the airport, queues are possible after a flight.
  4. Cash or card. Turkish shops accept cards, but a card issued in Russia may be declined abroad.

What is IMEI registration and the 120-day rule?

Turkey registers phones by IMEI number in a government database. Phones bought abroad get a grace period. According to the Turkey Travel Planner reference (page updated July 2026), a foreign phone can be used on roaming or with a Turkish SIM for up to 120 days without registration. After that it must be registered and the fee paid, or it is blocked on all three Turkish networks.

Key points:

  • Period. Some reviews mention 365 days, but most sources still say 120 days. We could not confirm a change from an official source, so go by 120 days and check with the regulator BTK (hotline 120) or your operator.
  • Fee amount. According to the same reference, 57,241 lira from 1 January 2026 (45,614 lira in 2025). The amount is reviewed every year; other reviews give different figures, so check the current one.
  • How to register. Pay the fee at the tax office (Vergi Dairesi) and complete registration at an operator’s shop or via the e-Devlet portal. You need a passport with an entry stamp and, as a rule, a residence permit.
  • Limit. One phone per person every three years.

For a holiday of a week or two, the rule does not affect you: you stay well within 120 days. It matters for people who live in Turkey for months and use a local SIM there.

Is a local SIM or a tourist eSIM better for travellers?

A tourist eSIM is a digital profile installed with a QR code before you fly. Our Turkey plans use Vodafone, with 5G on Vodafone.

Criterion Local SIM Tourist eSIM
Where to buy Shop or kiosk in Turkey Online, before the trip
Documents Passport Email only, for the QR code
Time to connect 15–30 minutes after landing, queues possible Installed at home, connects after landing
Price Guide of 15–30 US dollars per pack, higher at the airport (range, October 2026) From $2.29
Turkish number Yes, you can make local calls No, mobile internet only
IMEI registration Needed for long use (after 120 days) Not an issue for short trips
Main SIM Needs a second slot or a replacement Stays in the phone; eSIM works alongside

A local SIM makes sense if you need calls within Turkey (renting accommodation, deliveries, tours) or if you live there for more than a month. For holidays and short trips most people choose an eSIM: no queues, no showing a passport, and messengers and maps work right after landing.

How do you choose an eSIM plan for Turkey?

Choose by trip length and habits:

  • Weekend in Istanbul (3–4 days): maps, messengers, taxis; a small pack is enough. For example, 3 GB costs $5.09.
  • Beach holiday (7–14 days): photos, video, stories; take a bigger pack or a daily unlimited plan.
  • Working on the road: count video calls separately; an hour of video is hundreds of megabytes.

You can buy a plan in advance and activate it within 180 days, and most plans let you top up the same eSIM. Current plans and prices:

Plan Validity Price
1 GB 7 days $2.29
3 GB 1 month $5.09
5 GB 1 month $7.59
10 GB 1 month $10.99
20 GB 1 month $16.99
50 GB 1 month $39.59
Day pass 1 GB/day 7 days $6.90
Day pass 1 GB/day 15 days $10.90
Day pass 1 GB/day 1 month $19.90

What else is useful to know about mobile service in Turkey?

  • Resorts and mountains. In Antalya, Alanya, Bodrum and Istanbul all three operators have stable coverage; in mountain areas and on roads it varies, so check the operator’s coverage map.
  • Roaming with a Russian SIM. Russian roaming tariffs in Turkey are usually expensive and the terms change, so for internet most travellers use a local SIM or eSIM. Check your own operator’s terms.
  • Payments and apps. Taxis, card payments and food delivery need only internet; a Turkish number is not required.
  • Hotel Wi-Fi. Free Wi-Fi is almost everywhere, but the speed is unstable; mobile internet is needed for maps and translation.

FAQ

Do I need a passport to buy a SIM card in Turkey?

Yes. A physical SIM is registered against your passport, and the details are entered into the operator’s system. A tourist eSIM does not need a passport.

Will my phone be blocked after 120 days?

The rule applies to foreign phones used in Turkey for more than 120 days without registration. For an ordinary trip the period never comes up. If you plan to live in Turkey, register the phone in advance.

Is a SIM cheaper at the airport or in the city?

City shops of Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom are usually cheaper than the airport. If you need a connection right after landing, it is more reliable to set up an eSIM in advance.

Which carrier in Turkey is best?

There is no single answer. Turkcell and Vodafone are strong in cities, and Türk Telekom is often praised for stability outside large cities. Check the operator’s coverage map for your route.

Does an eSIM work in Turkey without a Turkish number?

Yes, it provides mobile internet. Use messengers for calls. If you need to call local numbers, buy a physical SIM.

Can I share the internet from an eSIM?

Hotspot mode works on most plans. The terms are shown on the plan card.

What if I did not install the eSIM?

You can activate the plan within 180 days of purchase. If the eSIM was never installed, refunds are available for 180 days; if it was installed but not activated, for 30 days.
