UAE Tourist SIM Card: du, e& and Virgin Mobile Compared
A free starter pack at the airport, paid tourist plans, indicative prices for October 2026 and a comparison with a tourist eSIM.
Short answer: in the UAE, tourists can use the operators du, e& (formerly Etisalat) and Virgin Mobile, which runs on the du network. After arrival, du and e& give a free starter pack of about 10 GB for one day; after that you need a paid plan. You need a passport to buy a SIM. If you do not want to deal with this at the airport, install a tourist eSIM before you fly.
Which carriers operate in the UAE?
The country has two main operators with their own networks and one virtual operator:
- du — the second-largest operator. It gives tourists a free pack after passport control.
- e& (Etisalat) — the largest operator. Reviews more often call it the best for coverage and for simple eSIM setup on arrival.
- Virgin Mobile UAE — a virtual operator on the du network. Tourist plans are paid, the SIM must be collected in person, at Dubai airports (terminals 1, 2 and 3), Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
Is it true that you get a free SIM at UAE airports?
Yes. According to Gulf News (a report from September 2025), both du and e& give visitors a free pack:
- du: 10 GB for 24 hours, activated after passport control. The offer is for people aged 18 and over with a valid entry stamp or visa, and no more than two SIMs per passport.
- e&: an instant eSIM with 10 GB of data for one day. After that you need to buy a paid plan.
The offer is confirmed by 2026 reviews, but we could not check it on the operators’ websites. Terms can change, so confirm them at the counter or in the operator’s app. Do not count on the free pack as your only connection: it covers the first day.
How much does a tourist SIM card cost in the UAE?
Operators publish their own prices, but reviews disagree. Below are guide figures from open sources, checked October 2026; these are ranges, not guaranteed prices:
- e& Visitor Line: a pack of 10 GB with 60 minutes for 28 days, about 94 dirhams before 5% VAT (according to Gulf News, 2025).
- Virgin Mobile: according to Gulf News, about 99 dirhams for 3 days of unlimited data, about 142 dirhams for 40 GB over 7 days, and about 500 dirhams for 30 days of unlimited data. Other reviews give different figures (for example, 150 dirhams for 21 GB over 7 days), so check the price at the counter.
- du: paid packs after the free day are comparable to e&; exact amounts are not confirmed, so check the du app.
One dirham is roughly 0.27 US dollars.
What do you need to buy a SIM in the UAE?
- Passport and entry stamp or visa. SIMs are registered to your passport details.
- Age 18 or over.
- In-person visit. Virgin, for example, does not deliver tourist SIMs.
- Unlocked phone. For eSIM the phone must support this format.
One starter pack is issued per passport, and a second SIM may be subject to different rules. Check the terms on the spot.
Is a local SIM or a tourist eSIM better for travellers?
A tourist eSIM is a digital profile that you can install with a QR code before departure. Our United Arab Emirates plans use Du, with 5G on Du.
| Criterion | Local SIM / operator eSIM | Tourist eSIM |
|---|---|---|
| Where to get it | Airport, shop or app in the UAE | Online, before the trip |
| Documents | Passport and visa or entry stamp | Email only, for the QR code |
| First day | Free 10 GB from du and e& | Paid plan from the moment of activation |
| Price of a paid pack | Guide of 94–500 dirhams (range, October 2026) | From $4.19 |
| Local number | Yes | No, internet only |
| Main SIM | Needs a second slot or a replacement | Stays in the phone |
| Validity | 3–30 days | Chosen by plan |
The free day is good if you need internet straight after landing. For the rest of the trip, compare paid packs with a tourist eSIM, which you can set up in advance without queuing.
Which eSIM plan should you choose for the UAE?
- Transit or 2–3 days: a small pack is enough for maps, messengers and taxis.
- A week in Dubai or Abu Dhabi: take a medium pack. Uber, Careem and navigation use little data, while photos and video use a lot.
- Two weeks or more: choose a pack with some margin.
You can buy a plan in advance and activate it within 180 days. On most plans the eSIM is topped up on the same line. Current plans:
| Plan | Validity | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days | $4.19 |
| 3 GB | 1 month | $8.99 |
| 5 GB | 1 month | $13.29 |
| 10 GB | 1 month | $22.79 |
| 20 GB | 1 month | $39.59 |
| Day pass 1 GB/day | 7 days | $19.90 |
| Day pass 1 GB/day | 15 days | $40.90 |
| Day pass 1 GB/day | 1 month | $80.90 |

What else is useful to know about mobile service in the UAE?
- Coverage. In Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah coverage is excellent, and both main operators have 5G. In the desert and between emirates the signal can weaken.
- Calls over the internet. Some voice services in the country are restricted. For ordinary calls you need a local SIM with minutes; for messages, internet is enough.
- Roaming. Russian roaming tariffs in the UAE are usually expensive, so travellers take a local SIM or eSIM. Check your operator’s terms.
- Wi-Fi. Hotels, shopping centres and the metro have free Wi-Fi, but it is unstable; taxis and maps need mobile internet.
Is it worth getting a SIM at a UAE airport?
If you land for a day or are in transit, the free pack covers the first day at no cost. For a week or longer it is not enough: you will need to buy a paid pack at a shop or in the app, show your passport and pay in dirhams. A tourist eSIM bought in advance means no search for a counter after the flight, but it has no local number. Choose depending on whether you need calls in the UAE.
How much data do you need on a trip to the UAE?
About 1 GB a day is enough for maps, taxis and messengers. If you shoot video, post stories or work remotely, plan for 2–3 GB a day. The free 10 GB for one day covers the first day with a margin, but after that you will need to buy a pack. Local packs for 7–30 days are usually more than a short trip needs, while an eSIM can be chosen for the exact period.
